I’m kissing 50 and loving every minute of it! Someone told me today that when I hit 51 I won’t feel that way, but I say, “NO WAY!” Every day and every year (and every wrinkle and thigh dimple) is an adventure…and a story to be told!
Speaking of stories, I was 42 when I reached for my dream career of writing and publishing fiction and nonfiction and I have been going strong ever since. When I say I “dream career,” I don’t say the words lightly. At the age of 12, having been asked by a teacher what I “wanted to be when you grow up,” I answered, “A writer.” Though I know she meant well, she said, “Well you can’t do that.” Sad to report, I bought that lie. After high school I studied nursing, a field I worked in (off and on) for about 15 years, all the while being a wife and mother.
I kept my creative side polished by writing plays for school/church youth groups and by continuing to study dance in various forms. (I was a trained dancer as a child, but don’t ask me to arabesque these days!) I was one of three choreographers and a performer in a 35-member troupe that toured the Southeastern part of the United States and the Bahamas in the early 1990s. I’ve actually danced before the Parliament building in Nassau! (Barefoot! In the heat! I have pictures!)
Today, I am the award winning author of The Potluck Club, Shadow of Dreams, and Sex, Lies, and the Media. My other works include (but are not limited to) The Potluck Club Trouble’s Brewing, Summon the Shadows, Shadows of Light, Oasis: A Spa for Body & Soul, and Sex, Lies, and High School. FYI: Oasis is a boomer-babe book if there ever was one!
In 2008 my dream book, Falling Into the Bible, will be released. This book, cowritten with my Jewish friend and best selling author, Miriam Feinberg Vamosh, will be a scriptural, traditional, and personal falling into the Bible as we explore various sites in the Holy Land. (I return Feb. 14, 2007!)
My hubby of three decades and I have a “yours, mine, and ours” kinda family and are currently raising our nine-year-old granddaughter. It’s either keeping us young or aging us quickly…we’re not sure. In my “spare” time (and I use that word lightly) I love shopping, reading, meeting girlfriends for coffee in side-street cafes, and watching classic films, my favorite being My Favorite Wife with Cary Grant and Irene Dunne. I’ve never met a jewelry or cosmetic store I didn’t love and, though I know it’s really sick, I can quote entirely too many lines from Pretty Woman.
I am a seminary graduate and speak in churches or to church groups across the country as well as internationally.
