Cheryll Hutchings

hutchings.jpgConsidering I may be one of the oldest “boomer babes” in the group, I have enough to talk about to fill several pages, but they gave us all a maximum word count, those pesky editorial types (aka: Allison.)

I will have been married to my husband Robert (Bob) for 30 years this March. We started our family late; I was 30 when my first son was born and 33 when my second son joined the family. Starting our families late in life is not uncommon for some of us Baby Boomers born in the early 50’s. Once we graduated we decided to live a little before marrying or starting a family. So Aaron is only 24 and Scott is 21. They are both wonderful sons and I am proud of them. Scott is a Sergeant in the Marine Corps and Aaron is a computer technician for a large insurance company. Although they are both single, they currently have steady girlfriends who are both very nice young ladies.

With my husband retiring toward the middle of the year, I will be facing many changes before 2008 rolls in. Bob would like to relocate to South Carolina from our present home in Ohio, the place where I was born and have lived all my life. I’m looking forward to a change, but the feeling of loss is something I must also face.

I must also figure out how to move three cats and a house filled with 30 years of collecting. I am an avid collector of books, (we have eight book cases full of books and oodles of boxes in the attic). I also collect clear glass condiment dishes and bowls of all shapes and sizes, small pill boxes and small antique plates (the size they serve sandwiches on at tea parties.)

Along with collecting books, I love reading and I know someday I will finish that novel I’ve started. You may even find me doing it this year—making my boomer babe dream come true in 2007! I enjoy working in my garden (as much as I do reading) and look forward to being able to stay outdoors longer than four months when we move south. I always have a vegetable garden, perennial beds and an assortment of annuals all summer long.

I’ve been blessed to work with Allison since the very first book released in the God Allows U-Turns series—it’s been quite a journey! Co-editing every volume in the series and acting as a virtual administrative assistant from hundreds of miles away, while holding down a full time job, has kept me busy. But for those of you who know Allison, she’s quite passionate about her work and has a way of getting folks to jump on her bandwagon—she’s been doing it to me since we were little girls growing up in Cleveland. It’s hard to say no to your only sister.

While working at my computer, I love watching the birds come to the eight feeders in our yard, just outside my home office window. I’ve catalogued over 24 varieties, and hope to spot more when we move. I also hope we have deer visit our new home, because we often see up to a dozen at once, nibbling on the corn we feed them in the winter. What a wonderful sight.

God has truly blessed me over the years and I pray His blessings will continue in the future with new and wonderful things to experience. I hope to never feel “too old” to enjoy and appreciate them. Boomer Babes indeed Rock—and I’m glad of it!
